‘Net News Roundup 7/10/09
Posted by | Tommy Liu | July 10, 2009 | What are Your Thoughts?

It’s been over two weeks and Michael Jackson is still in the news, I guess this is what they meant when they said “he will live on.” Show of hands, who watched the memorial? C’mon, tell me you weren’t bawling when his daughter Paris got all choked up talking about him. Alright, that’s enough let’s get into some real news, some ‘net news, how convenient it’s the ‘Net News Roundup.
Social Media Marketing Spend To Hit $3.1 Billion by 2014 - I can’t emphasize it enough. The social media marketing tree just keeps growing and growing! According to the Interactive Marketing Forecast by the Forrester group, social media marketing will grow at an annual rate of 34 percent.
Twitter gains entry in dictionary – Twitter will be listed in the 30th anniversary edition of the Collins English Dictionary, appearing as both a noun and a verb. A couple of Twitter terms will be included as well, check the article.
Meet The Social Media G-Men – You know social media is big when the government gets involved. The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), the government unit known as the “investigative arm of Congress,” has launched a presence on YouTube and Twitter. The government being more social and reaching out to its people hmm… what a concept.
People Go Online to Access… People – Depending on your take of why people go online this may or may not surprise you, according to Ruder Finn’s new survey and online “Intent Index” tool about why people go online only 33% of users surveyed said they go online to buy things and even fewer (28%) compare prices. 92% of users say they are here to connect with others, “share” (86%) or “discuss” (76%). The bottom line is that online is a great way to interact and engage with people.
Ask And You Shall Receive (An Answer On Twitter) – Whether your question is “Which U.S. city has the best music scene?”, “Who is Hannah Montana?”, or “Boxers or Briefs?”, Aardvark will try to find someone in your network best suited to answer that question. Read on to find out how!
Twittorati Will Show You How Awesomely Fascinating Bloggers’ Lives Are (Or Not) – In other Twitter news: Technorati gives birth to Twittorati, a chip off the old block except, Twitterized. Twittorati aggregates tweets from Technorati’s top 100 bloggers which includes The Huffington Post, Techcrunch, and TMZ.
Facebook Adds Tool For Extending Brand Pages - Say hello to the “Fan Box” widget, where brands can now publish their Facebook Page tweets (oops!) I mean, “status updates” onto their own websites (it sure took them a while). Gain fans to your page easily by posting this widget onto your website. For instructions, click here.
Brizzly: A Twitter Reader From The People Who Brought You Google Reader – Here’s a Twitter app that can create groups out of the users you follow, gives you insights into why certain topics are trending, and threads direct message conversations. It also gives you multiple account access, allows you to save multiple drafts of tweets, and keeps track of where you left off reading in your stream. And it should handle media (pictures and video) in a more seamless way that Twitter itself currently does. And its logo is flat-out awesome! As the article suggests it “looks to be a bear wearing a dead Twitter bird’s skin,” check the article.
TidyTweet: Twitter Search Without the Spam – Another cool Twitter app that helps battle spam when it comes to trending topics, and if you frequent Twitter’s trending topics then you know how big of a pain spamming is. The app is in private beta right now, but hopefully when released it’ll help cut down spam considerably. Keep an out for this.
Twitter Pimp: Cash for Tweets – Poor Twitter, struggling to find ways to monetize while its users are using its services to “ca-ching!” Check the article for some of the figures being thrown around on the backs of Twitter.
Twitter seems to be taking over the ‘Net News Roundup. No surprise I guess, considering Twitter seems to be on pace to take over the world. There’s been talks as of late about a possible Nobel Peace Prize. All this clout to write in 140 characters or less. Not too shabby.
