‘Net News Roundup 6/26/09
Posted by | Tommy Liu | June 26, 2009 | What are Your Thoughts?

There were a lot of celebrity deaths in the news this week including possibly the biggest, but let’s take a break from that and talk social media, web 2.0, and online video, it’s the ‘Net News Roundup.
Video In Rich Media Ads More Likely To Lead Customers To Purchase – According to a release by Google a study by DoubleClick suggests that “rich media ad formats that contain video ‘overwhelmingly’ outperform other types of creative media ad, such as images and simple animation Flash.” By outperforming the DoubleClick means video ads sell more products. This makes sense in that video can include a lot of movement making it eye-catching and it’s a form of advertising audiences are accustomed to because it relates to television commercials. Video advertising, it’s the way to go.
Google Wants You To Become A Gmail Ninja. Or Look Like A Huge Nerd Trying. – I’ve always wanted to be a ninja and now Google has given me (and you) the opportunity. There are four levels of expertise one can be deemed: “White belt,” “Green belt,” “Black belt,” and “Gmail master.” The purpose of this is to remind and teach Gmail users all the available tools Gmail has to offer (which there are tons). You’ll find a breakdown of what each belt entails in the article. Which belt are you?
“Facebook: The Movie” Enters Production This Year – No, you did not read that wrong. A Facebook movie will be on its way to a theatre (maybe, I’m seeing more “straight-to-cable subtly written here) near you! To be titled The Social Network (where’s the effort?) released by Columbia Pictures, possibly directed by David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button [really David Fincher? You're going to follow Benjamin Button with Facebook? Not even Twitter would follow that]) and hopefully seen by its 200 million members comes a movie about founder Mark Zuckerberg and his creation.
NBC To Stream Wimbledon Online – More videos online? Can’t be mad at that. “Sunday Night Football” was brought online last year (high-fives and chest-bumps all around) and now Wimbledon. Maria Sharapova snarling and grunting as she smashes tennis balls (and opponents) from the comfort of my computer at work? What more can a man ask for? (It’s time to follow suit NBA)
Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network’s Plan to Dominate the Internet — and Keep Google Out – Facebook to dominate the internet over Google? Hmmm. Is that possible? Imagine an internet where you can see what everyone is up to as well as poking them. Yeah…that’s an internet I’d want to be apart of.
MySpace To Terminate 2/3 Of International Staff – As mentioned last week MySpace canned 30% of their U.S. employees as the international staff await their names to be called, about 66% of them. Check the article for the press release and email from MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta to what’s left of their staff.
Vizio releasing Twitter-, Flickr-, Netflix-enabled TV – The gap between TV and the web continue to bridge as Vizio releases a HDTV that can stream free and subscribed content while working with Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and the Yahoo Widgets Engine. The remote control, however, is the sweetest part of this deal, like certain smartphones it comes with a slide-down QWERTY keyboard. Check the article to see it.
Twitterature: 19 Year-Olds Score Twitter Book Deal – If you thought the Facebook movie was ridiculous get a load of this “‘Twitterature: The World’s Greatest Books, Now Presented in Twenty Tweets or Less’, an upcoming title from Penguin books, penned by two 19 year-olds.” If you’re lucky you’ll get to read this on Kindle.
Lengthening Attention Spans – According to comScore the “average length of online video consumed increased by 15% between November 2008 and April 2009.” As the article suggests, online video viewers are watching longer videos and are watching fewer, but longer ads, a preference over more short ads.
Miss Out On Your Facebook Vanity URL? Here’s Your Consolation Prize. – Absolute sweetness! If you missed out on getting the vanity name you wanted for Facebook there’s an app that gives you a second chance. Your URL will have an additional four letters, but that’s a small price to pay for the name you want. Check the article for details.
YouTube Doubles Max File Size on Uploads to 2GB – Unfortunately the max length of the video is still 10-minutes, but this means higher quality!
Michael Jackson Dies: Twitter Tributes Now 30% of Tweets – This is a glimpse of how fast news travel on Twitter as well as how “social” this media is as strangers all over the world grieve and mourn together.
On that note, let’s discuss and remember all the great memories these people have given us.
