It is a beautiful Friday today, not because of the sunny 81 degree weather with a hint of wind in LA, but because of the ‘Net News Roundup. This is a beautiful thing – you get convenient industry news in one place.

One Giant Leap for Twitterkind; Mike Massimino Tweets from Space – “From orbit: Launch was awesome!! I am feeling great, working hard, & enjoying the magnificent views, the adventure of a lifetime has begun!” This is the very first tweet from space. The tweet is alright, but he should’ve had some fun with it like “Here I am just staring into space trying to reach the stars and stay light on my feet so I can avoid that black-hole next to Uranus.” You and I both knew that was coming I’ll stop now.

Student hoaxes world’s media on Wikipedia – One of the greatest thing to ever spawn from the Internet is Wikipedia, such a convenient place to find information on just about anything. The coolest part about Wikipedia is all the material is user-generated, which means you can’t take everything you read there as 100% fact. Shane Fitzgerald, a student from Dublin University, made up a quote on Maurice Jarre’s Wikipedia page hours after the French composer’s death. Wikipedia’s administrators corrected the made-up quote immediately, but not before dozens of online newspapers and blogs quoted it.

Budget Crunch: Innovation’s the Only Way Out – Social media continues to inch closer and closer to company’s marketing plan for it offers a less expensive outlet as well as a way to get nearly instant feedback. In a recession consumer spending is shifting to comfort and community and marketers need to adjust in the form of being innovative with a smaller budget.

Google Blog Search Gets Faster, More Accurate – Google has recently updated their blog search engine to provide more up to date blog posts and faster results going up against the likes of Technorati and memetrackers.

Calling All Dudes: Break.com Wants Your Fratastic Videos – Break.com, a site Matt often frequents, is a social video site for guys and is now offering 50% more for UGC (user-generated content). Kudos to Break.com for sticking to their guns and offering residence for UGC while “premium” content is the hot topic between Hulu and YouTube. Now I’m going to grab a camera and a six-pack and head to the local colleges and see if I can convince anyone to ride a shopping cart off a rooftop and make a little money.

Okay, so there wasn’t a whole lot of wowing news this week for social media and online video marketing, but at least the weather is nice. Less news means less reading and more time to take in the nice weather before it becomes scorching. Yeah…I’m going to go take in some of that sun now. See you next week.
