It’s Frriiiiday, you know it’s myyyyy day! I’m working on a theme song for this segment. It is the first of May, which is proclaimed as the start of summer, in terms of blockbuster movies anyhow. But around here, Friday just means the ‘Net News Roundup, which is always a blockbuster (ask the shattered Rubik’s Cube).

Online Video Ad Growth Slows, But Remains One Of Fastest Emerging Media – Advertisers: Projected to spend $699 million on online video ads in 2009. Supercool Creative: Waiting.

Hoover’s Builds Searchable Social Network – Hoover’s, a research company that provides information on companies and industries, is looking to become a social network by improving search features. By opening their backend infrastructure through an API companies can integrate business info into their apps and platforms. Doing this will allow Hoover’s to provide more in-depth profiles of companies becoming a stronger tool for marketers.

The New Connectedness – Here’s a fine example of social media at work and an even better demonstration of the outreach of the human heart.

Forrester: Social Web To Evolve Due To Portable IDs – With the rapid growth of social media in the past couple of years its development continues to evolve, and according to this article it’s only a matter of time before people have their ID online making the social experience a lot more convenient. This will only be the beginning as apps and widgets will be developed to cater to these IDs and better the social experience, websites will adjust to best suit individuals, and the opportunities with portal IDs can lead in to some amazing things.

BuddyPress Launches: May A Thousand Social Networks Bloom (Someday) – BuddyPress is a new social network offspring of WordPress that you use over WordPress MU. BuddyPress 1.0 is basically marketing as all the features you like from major social networks without the nonsense and troubles of those same major social networks (new TOS my foot!). Also, it’ll be a social network where the user has more control over. More details inside.

Twitter Brings Search On Site To All – Twitter made a few subtle, but very key, changes to its layout: searches are now done on page without having to go to a separate page, you can save searches if you tend to look up the same thing repeatedly, and below the search will be a list of Trending Topics, which are the most searched for topics currently on Twitter. This isn’t new to selected groups and new users whom Twitter tested this on, but it is now the standard layout for all Twitter users.

Disney’s Hulu Deal Raises Questions About YouTube Model – Earlier this week Disney took nearly a 30% share in Hulu with their deal. This could mean big trouble for Google and their video site YouTube, because Google has been desperately trying to find a strong ad model to attract advertisers through their new option of premium content. The Disney deal only makes Hulu stronger and gain more ground on YouTube. How will YouTube respond? Maybe by finally getting back to one of our numerous attempts to get in contact with them.

IAB Makes Good on Promise to Agencies – In an attempt to push ad creativity and create ad formats to satisfy publishers, advertisers, and agencies across the board the trade group Interactive Advertising Bureau held meetings with bigs in their respected industries such as BBDO Worldwide, Ogilvy Interactive, Yahoo, Microsoft, Google, CBS Interactive and many more. If IAB does indeed continue to follow through with their plans online advertising may undergo some major changes and be more measurable. I’m excited for this.

That’s about all that really tickled my fancy this week, but as usual, let me know of any great articles I may have missed. Enjoy your weekend and I’ll see you next week.
