A Great Tweet From JetBlue (The Power of Twitter)

Found this on Twitter and enjoyed it thoroughly. This is an example of a business utilizing social media – here JetBlue is engaging with a customer through Twitter. The significance of this instance is through the little effort it took JetBlue to respond (cleverly) to a customer it shows JetBlue pays attention to what their customers say and through their snappy remark it’s getting some social media push behind it, which means free good publicity, evoking good feelings all around towards the company (note that JetBlue responded within an hour of the customer’s tweet – kudos). If people feel a company cares then there’s a good chance that company will earn those people’s business. This act of customer interaction can easily be a deciding factor for someone looking to choose an airline for his next trip. Here’s the link to the customer’s blog where this picture is located (make love to JetBlue’s terminal? What type of protection is required here? Guns and bombs won’t make it pass security in this scenario).
On the other end of the spectrum is how the power of social media (Twitter in this case) can damage a company. According to this article from TechCrunch FTD.com, an online floral shop, failed to deliver flowers to many recipients on Mother’s Day creating a stir on Twitter. According to the stats from Twendz 83% of tweets involving “FTD” and “mom” are negative. When 83% of the things people are saying about your company is negative it simply translates to “bad business” (I ordered flowers from FTD two days before Mother’s Day and my mother received them the next day, so for the time being they’re okay in my book).
Social media is a powerful marketing tool, are you using it correctly? Are you aware of your company’s presence on the Internet?
