Boy, there just isn’t a whole lot of good news going around lately; a university mistakenly admits 29,000 students who were meant to be rejected, Facebook’s CFO leaves (he must’ve really not liked the new Facebook layout), my NCAA bracket is an epic fail, and first we were to avoid peanuts and now pistachios this is, well, nuts! – the big scare is these foods have protective shells, what chance do fruits have?! Tragic.

Now onto some industry news.

China Blocks YouTube – Was it something we said?

Social Media 2009 = Search 2002 – Social media sites are becoming strong drivers of traffic, in some cases better than search on Google. Social media will continue to grow in 2009 especially as a cheaper alternative to advertising by businesses. There has yet to be a universally accepted minimum of views to determine a video as viral or a successful campaign, but this article gives a brief analysis of a few campaigns and what they’ve accomplished. Also a few tips are given to better one’s chance of having a viral video. I agree with the tips, but using the Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates ad as an example of success is ehh…

People Search Engines – The internet brings everyone closer; you can learn what type of music people are into, see people’s photos, hell, you can even be notified as to what people are doing at that very moment if they so incline. But when is it too far? There are websites that let you dig up information on people whether it’s comments, pictures, videos or anything juicy they’ve done online, and to take it a step further one of these sites can monitor your contacts and their online activities for a monthly fee. These companies aren’t doing anything illegal, they’re just doing what any dedicated stalker can with the internet. Most of you reading this would like me to say “April Fools’” right about now, but unfortunately this is true. Check out the article and definitely be more conscious of what you post online. I gotta go see if I can bury some unfavorable photos.
