Welcome to the second edition of the ‘Net New Roundup where I compile a list of note-worthy news articles pertaining to web 2.0 and online marketing for your convenience. All sorts of good stuff has popped up over the week, but Dominose cheese pizzas and false Pepsi promotions aside, let’s get into some ‘net news!
Twitter on Fire: Traffic More Than Doubles in March – According to ComScore Twitter attracted 9.3 million unique visitors in March, which is 5 million more than the site had a month ago. ComScore’s blog notes Twitter users are news junkies, which I can attest to – so much info and so convenient. Be sure to follow gettingspotted on Twitter. That’s pretty much all the article says, but check it out for the graph Ad Age has up, it makes me think of the start of a drawing of a pool from a five-year-old. No? Just me?
Closing The Gap: Facebook Only 9 Million Visitors Away From Passing MySpace In U.S. – Myspace needs to watch its back because The Face is only a measley 9.1 million unique visitors away from becoming the most popular social networking site in the U.S. of A. The crown is sliding off Myspace’s head and he’ll soon look like one of these guys. I’m going to bet Facebook’s reign starts early August. Any takers?
YouTube Takes Aim At Hulu With “Party Of Five” – This is a fun title because YouTube will definitely need more than a “Party of Five” to go at Hulu as the top premium content provider. YouTube will soon expand the range of its content on its site from various studios that include Crackle/Sony Pictures, CBS, MGM, Lionsgate, Starz and many more. There will be thousands of full TV episodes, as well as hundreds of movies, but initially older TV shows and movies as YouTube makes more deals. As for searching on YouTube, UGC (user-generated content) will be separated from the new “premium” content. So much segregation even today…I dream one day that UGC and premium content can play side-by-side (you’ll probably need to open two windows for this).
Kutcher Plays His Pied Piper Flute And Gets A Million Twitter Followers – You may have won this time Kutcher, but Larry King will not take this sitting down! In front of a mic. With glasses, a tie and suspenders. The only ticker running here is the bomb that’s going to go off on your ass! Click here to see what the wagers and antes are.
Visible Measures Now Tracking Videos At MySpace – Myspace is the second biggest video site on the web (greatly) behind YouTube. Visible Measures will visibly measure how users watch and spread videos on Myspace. This is great, but more importantly when will I be able to see private profiles without adding them?!
Study: ROI May Be Measurable in Facebook, MySpace After All – Marketing through social networking sites is a weary thought for many because for the most part it’s still a new form of marketing and although a great way to generate discussion there has yet to be a solid formula to measure sales. Myspace teams with ComScore to make ROI measurements more obtainable. Check the article out for facts and figures.
Revised Forecast Predicts Internet Will Be Only Medium To Grow Ad Dollars This Year – The first line of the article says it all, “The Internet is the only medium expected to reap advertising increases during 2009.” So if you’re wondering how you should spend your advertising dollars online is the way to go. Personally, I’d go with online video + social media, but that’s only because I’ve seen it’s success of reaching a mass audience and because I’m bias.
Nielsen: Online Video Audience Bounces Back In March – I knew our Super Funny Valentine’s Day Song Video should’ve gotten more views! Total video streams reached 9.7 billion in March and the damage mostly done on YouTube. According to Nielsen Hulu is the second largest video site behind YouTube, which contradicts the Myspace article from TechCrunch above, so now I don’t know who to believe. But it doesn’t really matter right? Because no one remembers second place.
The Web in Numbers: The Rise of Social Media – Facts and figures on the state of social media as it becomes apart of everyday life. Thanks Dave for the article.
And that is the roundup of the week. Hope you enjoyed it. Let me know if I missed any articles. Enjoy your weekend and drop me a Tomment somewhere!
