A Blog About Winning The Internet

Valentine’s + Social Media = Computer Love

It’s that time of season again where you either get the feeling that love is in the air or the feeling just isn’t mutual because you play for the other team and if you see another heart-shaped anything your gag reflexes get to work. It’s that time when X’s and O’s have nothing to do with sports; a man wielding a bow-and-arrow doesn’t warrant a police report; roses miraculously sky-rocket in value; and teddy bears become an endangered species (the first half of February is huntin’ season). I can only be speaking of Valentine’s Day, or as it is called in the streets: V-Day. I’m neither here nor there. Can I do without all the PDA (Public Display of Affection)? Sure. Would I go so far as to regulate hormonal-driven intimacy like a principal at a high school dance? Probably not. To each their own I say. However, there is good news for everyone. This is the era of the internet where everyone stays connected and social media is the link.

However you feel about the occasion there is usually someone else feeling the exact same way. Want to share with everyone you know your love for your significant other? Just update your status on Facebook. Your network of friends too small? Fret not, there are plenty of Facebook groups you can join and express your love there. Those groups make you sick? Facebook doesn’t favor lovers, so the other end of the spectrum for anti-V-Day groups is running just as strong (hate serves as good fuel). What if you don’t really hate V-Day, but just the fact that you’re alone? Get ready to feel like a groupie because there are groups for you too! (Wow that was corny, the rom-com marathon on TV must be getting to me.)

But what if you don’t have a Facebook account (you don’t have a Facebook account?!)? Then the blogosphere may be the place for you. Read up on romantic evenings and indulge in those couples’ bliss and hope to emulate that magic yourself. You can see where the bar is set at places like these Perfect Love Stories and Artvoice. Tales of unforgettable unison doesn’t pique your interest? Perhaps horror is your literature of choice, as in V-Day horror stories that will put a smile on your face. Check out Cosmopolitan’s Valentine’s Day Horror Stories and Women’s Health’s VDay Horror Stories.

Blogs and social networks are fine and dandy, but what if you prefer more interaction? This can be remedied through chat rooms or forums. Find topics discussing anything from terrible V-Day gift ideas (I don’t care what anyone says giving deodorant is a gesture of endearment — maintaining one’s perspiration and B.O. is vital for any relationship) to mingling with other singles (I’m 6′1 [on a good day] with a body fat of 7% [plus a few more], own a business [that's someone else's], and drive a BMW z6 [that's not out in America yet]). Here’s an example of a chat room and here’s a forum you can peruse.

So you see, V-Day is for everyone. You can embrace its warmth like other lovebirds; you can wallow with fellow misers; you can bash the pseudo-holiday in anti-Hallmark communities; and you can locate Valentine’s-less individuals with just a few clicks. This Valentine’s Day no one should be alone. Thanks social media.

Possibly, but I hear drinking a glass of red wine a night is good for you.
